Yoga for Health

Yoga Means to “yoke” or join together the mind, body and spirit. Through the practice of yoga, we become more aware of ourselves as well as the world around us. Yoga consists of practicing poses or postures that bring balance into the body. Through the breath, we are able to calm the mind, release tension from the body and settle “unsettling” emotions.

Think of the conscious mind as the ocean with lots of agitation, waves of thoughts, concerns and conflict. The deeper you can go below the surface, the more peace and calm you will find. When we perform yoga poses, our awareness is in the present moment. Easy poses allow us to explore the movement of the body and how we connect with our physical, mental and emotional experience. More challenging poses teach us that through concentration and focus on the breath, we can find comfort even in the most difficult moments of our lives.

The physicality of Yoga allows us to then sit quietly and practice mindfulness meditation; just watching the body, noticing our thoughts and refining the practice of being in the present moment. And through this discipline, science has shown a positive relationship between Yoga and health. When we breathe deeply and consciously, the blood pressure lowers, the heart beats slower and tension is released from the muscles. Yoga has been shown to decrease pain and improve our sense of well-being.
