Physical
fitness is achieved through regular,
moderate exercise that includes aerobic
conditioning, strength training and
flexibility. Being mentally fit requires
using the mind in ways that are creative,
inventive and moderately challenging.
Reading, learning new things, doing puzzles
all strengthen the function of the brain.
Emotionally, we need to be aware of our
feelings and practice virtues of gratitude,
compassion and non-judgment. Accepting
ourselves as we are, attempting to become
even better than we are and having the
courage to change what we need to in order
to become emotionally healthy.
When
we talk about the spiritual realm, it is all
about connections. Connecting to the self,
connecting to others and connecting to a
power that is greater than the self is an
important part of becoming spiritually fit.
When is the last time you sat and watched
the sunset, gazed at the moon or hugged a
tree? As people, we function on this earth
like pieces in a puzzle. We all play a role
that is an important part of making this
world what it is. Think about all the
special qualities and skills that you have
to offer society. We all have a place to
stand where we can feel proud, accomplished
and connected. One of the best ways to
become spiritually fit is to practice
service above self. Volunteer at a soup
kitchen, help to clean a park or visit
residents in a nursing home. When we perform
community service, it gives us a sense of
purpose and exercises our spiritual muscles,
so to speak.
